Can I Still Answer My Own Calls With an AI Answering Service?
Yes. Use an AI answering service as backup: your phone rings first, you take the calls you can, and an AI receptionist answers the ones you can't.

TL;DR
- Yes. An AI answering service can be your backup rather than your replacement: your phone rings first, you take the calls you can, and the AI answers the rest.
- In the Juney app, choose Ring me first and it rings you for about 15 seconds before she answers. Pick up and she stays out of the call. Decline or let it ring and she answers.
- Choose Straight to Juney on days you can't take any calls.
- The trade-offs: callers wait about 15 seconds longer, and you need to stay signed in to the app. Signed out, Juney answers straight away.

Most owners don't want to hand their phone over to AI. They want the calls that land while they're under a sink or up on a ridge to get answered, and they still want to talk to their regulars themselves.
What does it mean to use an AI answering service as backup?
Using an AI answering service as backup means you stay the first person a caller can reach, and the AI answers when you don't pick up. Some people call this an overflow answering service. Many use carrier no-answer forwarding: your phone rings, then the carrier passes the call on if you don't answer. A live answer can take job details, book a visit or put an urgent call through instead of a beep.
There are four ways to handle the calls you can't take:
| Setup | Who picks up first | What the caller gets when you're busy |
|---|---|---|
| Voicemail | You | A recorded greeting and a beep. You call back later. |
| AI as a replacement | The AI, on every call | A live answer, but even your regulars talk to the AI first. |
| AI backup using carrier no-answer forwarding | You, for the time your carrier sets | A live answer if voicemail or screening has not taken the call first |
| AI backup with Ring me first | You, in the Juney app, for about 15 seconds | A live answer from Juney if you don't pick up |
The backup setup suits owners who can take some calls during the day but not all of them. A roofer on the ground between jobs can answer. The same roofer harnessed in on the ridge can't.
How does ring-first answering work with Juney?
Your carrier forwards every call to Juney, and the Juney app on your phone rings you first, for about 15 seconds, before she answers. It works on iPhone and Android. In Ringing mode, choose Ring me first.
What happens on each call:
- A customer rings your business number. You keep your number and your carrier: calls are forwarded, nothing is moved.
- The Juney app rings you for about 15 seconds.
- Answer it, and you're talking to the caller yourself. Juney stays out of the call.
- Decline it or let it ring out, and Juney answers in your business name.
This isn't the carrier's "forward when busy or unanswered" setting. The carrier forwards every call to Juney, and the ringing happens in the app. That is why the app needs you signed in, and why the help center's steps for ringing your phone first start in the Juney tab rather than in your phone's settings.
Why not just use your carrier's no-answer forwarding?
Your carrier controls the wait before a missed call is forwarded. An answering-service carrier guide lists Verizon's wait as about 30 seconds and fixed, as of October 2026. A declined call counts as busy rather than unanswered. Your phone may also answer before forwarding: Verizon advises turning off Live Voicemail for conditional forwarding, and Google says automatically screened calls won't be forwarded.
Beside also offers an app-controlled ring; check its current settings for timing.
What to do: ask your carrier how long it rings and disable Live Voicemail or automatic screening if you're using no-answer forwarding.
What happens when Juney answers instead of you?
When Juney answers, she greets the caller with your own greeting and handles the call the way you've set it up for that kind of call. You decide this with scenarios (the reasons people ring you): she can ask the caller questions, tell them something you've written, book a job into your Google Calendar, text them your booking link, take a message, or put an urgent caller through to another number. Afterwards the summary and transcript are in the app, with a notification on your phone and, if you turn it on, an email.
Here's how a morning might go for a plumber:
- 9:40 AM, under a kitchen sink. The Juney app rings you and your hands are wet. You let it ring. Juney answers: a homeowner with a slow-draining bathroom sink wants to know what you charge to come out. She tells them the service call fee you added, books a visit into a free slot in your calendar and sends you the summary.
- 11:15 AM, washing up in the van. A builder you work with every week calls. You answer and talk to him yourself. Juney stays out of it.
- 12:30 PM, lunch. You read the 9:40 summary in the app and see the visit already in your calendar.
Juney doesn't give repair, safety or pricing advice of her own. The prices she quotes are the ones you've added, and anything else callers should hear goes into a scenario in your own words. You can see what this looks like for each trade, from burst pipes to storm leaks, on the Juney for the trades page.
Can she put an urgent caller through to me?
She can put urgent callers through to a number you choose, such as a partner or whoever's on call. She tells whoever answers who's calling and why; if they can't take it, she comes back to the caller and takes a message. With Ring me first, you can also take a call yourself in the app.
Can I keep talking to my regulars myself?
Yes. When you're free to pick up, regulars get you, the same as they always have. Juney catches the calls you can't take, so a homeowner who wants their roofer still reaches you when you're on the ground, and the calls that ring while you're on the ridge get a live answer instead of voicemail.
This also answers a common worry: some callers would rather speak to a person. With Ring me first, they can reach you whenever you're able to answer in the Juney app. When Juney answers, we recommend introducing her in your greeting as your AI assistant, so callers know who they're speaking with from the start.
What are the trade-offs of ringing your phone first?
Ringing your phone first keeps you on your own line, but it costs a little time and needs the app signed in. Be clear about these before you choose it.
- Callers wait a little longer. With Ring me first, the Juney app rings you for about 15 seconds before she answers. On a day when you can't answer anything, that's 15 seconds every caller spends waiting for nothing.
- The app needs to be reachable. Stay signed in, allow notifications and keep a data connection. If the app can't be reached, Juney answers without ringing you.
- Every call to that number is forwarded, including personal calls. Add family and regular suppliers to Excluded contacts so Juney doesn't answer them.
- Your carrier may charge for the forwarded call. The call is connected while the app rings, so those seconds can count on a plan that charges for forwarding.
- Declining means Juney answers. Tapping decline doesn't send the caller to your old voicemail. It hands the call to Juney, or to her voicemail greeting if your Answering schedule sends that call to voicemail.
- The backup is AI, not a person. If you don't answer, Juney does. There's no staffed human answering behind her. Human answering services offer that, and it's their main strength.
- Your phone still rings on the job. If you're somewhere you can't or shouldn't reach for it, let it ring.
What to do: choose Ring me first on days when you can answer some calls, and stay signed in to the app. On days when you can't answer any, switch to Straight to Juney so callers don't wait.
When should Juney answer every call?
Choose Straight to Juney when you know you won't be taking calls: a full day on the tools, a roof tear-off, a long drive, a holiday. In that mode she answers every call the moment it rings. Switch it in the Juney tab under Ringing mode, and switch back to Ring me first when you're ready to take calls again.
You can move between the two through the week: Ring me first on a quoting day when you're mostly in the van, Straight to Juney on an install day when your hands are never free.
How do business hours change what happens?
Your Answering schedule, together with your business hours, decides what kind of call Juney has with the caller. If you choose "Juney during business hours", she holds the full conversation inside your hours, and outside them callers hear your voicemail greeting and leave a recorded message of up to a minute. On those voicemail calls she doesn't answer questions, book jobs, quote prices, put calls through or text links.
When a call is due to go to voicemail, your phone still rings first if you've chosen that option. If you don't pick up, Juney answers with your voicemail greeting, and the caller leaves a message after the tone. With Straight to Juney, the voicemail greeting plays straight away. You can also change your Answering schedule from the Home tab: tap Juney and pick Juney, always, Juney during business hours or Juney after hours only. It's the same setting as in the Juney tab, so it stays until you change it back.
How do I set it up?
You set up Juney on your phone, with no computer and no dashboard. The app guides you through it in a few minutes:
- Introduce your business. Link your website and Juney learns your services, prices and hours. You check and correct what she found.
- Call Juney yourself. Hear her exactly as a customer would before any customer does.
- Forward your calls. The app shows the steps for your carrier and phone.
- Choose who answers. In Ringing mode, choose Ring me first, or Straight to Juney.
After that, every call Juney answers comes back to you as a summary, so if she gets something wrong you can see it and fix it in the app. Juney costs $49 a month or $490 a year (USD), with 150 minutes a month and top-ups of 100 minutes for $20, bought in the app, which don't expire, after a 7-day free trial with 50 minutes, as of October 2026. Calls you pick up yourself don't use your minutes: only the calls Juney answers do. Details are on the Juney pricing section, and how Juney works walks through a call from start to finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my phone still ring if I use an AI answering service?
With Juney it can. In Ringing mode, choose Ring me first: the Juney app rings you for about 15 seconds, and Juney answers if you don't pick up. Or choose Straight to Juney and she answers every call at once.
What happens if I decline the call?
Juney answers it. Declining or letting it ring out both hand the call to her, and you get a summary afterwards.
Can I switch between ringing my phone first and Juney answering every call?
Yes. In the Juney tab, tap Ringing mode and choose Ring me first, or Straight to Juney. Your number and forwarding stay the same either way.
What if I'm signed out of the Juney app?
Your phone won't ring first, because the ringing comes through the app. Juney answers straight away, so callers still get an answer.
Can an AI answering service handle just my overflow calls?
Yes. Some services use carrier no-answer forwarding and the carrier's timer. Juney receives all forwarded calls; in the Juney app, choose Ring me first for about 15 seconds to answer, with no Juney minutes used on calls you take. Choose Straight to Juney when you want her to answer instead.
