Upfirst alternatives: 6 options compared
Upfirst puts every feature on every plan: six calendars, 35+ languages, transfers and in-call texting. The reasons to look at another AI receptionist or answering service are the per-call meter, which climbs quickly past 30 calls, and a setup that runs on the web.
At 75 two-minute calls a month, Upfirst costs $59.95 (October 2026). Below, six alternatives with what each would cost at that volume, who each suits, and the catch.
The alternatives at a glance
| Service | Best for | Entry price | At 75 calls | Books and puts calls through at that price? |

| AIRA | Upfirst's prices with a built-in CRM and a free number | $24.95 a month for 30 calls | $59.95 | Transfers; booking through Zapier |
| Goodcall | Long calls and customers who ring back | $79 a month for 100 different callers | $79 | Yes |
| Rosie | Per-minute billing with a companion app | $49 a month for 250 minutes | $49 | Booking links by text; no booking or transfers |
| Beside | An app-first service with text replies | $29 a month for 30 calls | $99 | Yes |
| Smith.ai | Per-call billing with live people on hand | Free for 25 calls | $150 | Yes |
US dollars a month, from each service's own pricing page (checked October 22, 2026). 75 calls of 2 minutes, on the cheapest plan for that month, before tax and carrier charges.
Why look for an Upfirst alternative?
Not because of its reviews: its Trustpilot profile has none yet (October 2026). The reasons are in how it's built and billed.
- Every call past the allowance costs. Upfirst doesn't bill junk calls, but every real call counts, however short. Starter covers 30; at 75 calls you're on the $59.95 plan, and at 150 you pay $119.95.
- It's set up on the web. That suits an office manager better than an owner working from the van.
- Extra locations cost more. Each additional agent, for a second business or location, is $9.95 a month.
When to stay with Upfirst: you book into Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square or Clio, your callers speak other languages, you get a lot of hang-ups and spam, or you take fewer than about 45 calls a month. On those, few alternatives match it.
The 6 alternatives
Juney: best for owners who'd rather run it from their phone
It meters minutes, not calls, which favors short calls: $49 a month for 150 minutes, then top-ups of 100 minutes for $20. Two-minute calls cost $49 at 75 a month and $89 at 150, against Upfirst's $59.95 and $119.95. Everything happens in a phone app instead of a web interface. Upfirst uses carrier forwarding for missed calls. With Ring me first, the Juney app rings you for about 15 seconds on Juney's timer. It books into Google Calendar and works with numbers in the US, UK, Australia and Canada.
The catch: English only, Google Calendar only, no spam filter (you block numbers by hand) and no CRM.
AIRA: best for upfirst's prices with a built-in CRM and a free number
AIRA has the same four prices, allowances and per-call rates as Upfirst, from $24.95 a month for 30 calls, so 75 calls also cost $59.95. What it adds: a built-in CRM with a lead pipeline, a free AIRA phone number, 31 languages and spam filtering on every plan. It counts every handled call, though, with no exemption for short ones.
The catch: booking goes through Zapier rather than direct calendar connections, setup is in a web dashboard, and its pricing page doesn't mention a free trial.
Goodcall: best for long calls and customers who ring back
Goodcall swaps Upfirst's call count for a count of people: $79 a month for 100 different callers, with unlimited minutes. A regular who rings five times is billed five times at Upfirst and once at Goodcall, and spam and wrong numbers don't count either, so 75 calls from about 60 people cost $79. It can answer every call or use your carrier's no-answer forwarding for missed calls, and its transfers try up to three people.
The catch: English only, Google Calendar (or its API) for booking, and a demo agent instead of a trial.
Rosie: best for per-minute billing with a companion app
Rosie bills by the minute where Upfirst bills by the call: $49 a month for 250 minutes, so a 75-call month of two-minute calls is $49. No native Upfirst app was found; Rosie pairs its web dashboard with a native iPhone and Android app for calls, recordings and settings on the go. It speaks English and Spanish, fewer than Upfirst's 35+, and it lets you answer first through your carrier's no-answer forwarding.
The catch: booking and transfers, on every Upfirst plan, start at $149 on Rosie, and going over moves you up a plan.
Beside: best for an app-first service with text replies
Beside is run from a phone app, where Upfirst is run from the web. Its AI answers calls and inbound texts (Upfirst only sends texts during a call), books into your calendar, puts callers through, and rings you in its app before its AI answers. In place of per-call charges it's $29 for 30 AI-answered calls, then $99 with no cap, so 75 calls cost $99.
The catch: US and Canada lines only, no trial on the $29 plan, and fewer languages than Upfirst (up to five on iPhone, English only on Android).
Smith.ai: best for per-call billing with live people on hand
Smith.ai is per call like Upfirst and connects to Clio too, but adds live receptionists: Hybrid plans mix AI and people, and human plans put a person on every call. Its free plan covers 25 calls, and its AI answers in English and Spanish. At 75 calls it costs $150.
The catch: more than twice Upfirst's bill at 75 calls, and 30 days' notice to cancel an AI or Hybrid plan.
Which Upfirst alternative should you pick?
- You want Upfirst's prices with a CRM and a free number: AIRA.
- You want to set it up and run it from your phone: Juney, or Beside in the US and Canada.
- Your calls are long or come from the same customers: Goodcall.
- You take 50 to 150 short calls a month: a per-minute plan such as Juney or Rosie, but check which plan books and transfers.
- Some callers need a real person: Smith.ai.

How do you switch from Upfirst?
- Pull last month's calls from Upfirst's call log, including the ones it didn't bill, and price each option at that volume.
- If you book into a calendar other than Google, check the new service supports it before anything else.
- If Upfirst ported your number, ask it how to move the number to a phone carrier; forwarding services need it there.
- Start the new service's trial and test it with calls of your own: a booking, a price question, an urgent job.
- Move your forwarding and watch the first week's call notes.
- Cancel Upfirst. It has no contract.
