After-Hours Answering Service: Cover Calls Without Being On Call

An after-hours answering service or AI receptionist covers nights and weekends. Compare the options and costs, and decide which calls should wake you.

TL;DR

  • You can cover after-hours calls four ways: voicemail, your own phone or an on-call rota, a human answering service, or an AI answering service (AI receptionist).
  • Decide first which calls can't wait until morning. Keep that list short and put those callers through to whoever's on call; the rest become messages or bookings.
  • As of October 2026, Ruby's human service starts at $250 a month for 50 minutes. AI plans we checked run $24.95 to $99, and Juney is $49 with 150 minutes.
  • Juney answers day and night, or takes messages outside your business hours. Your choice.

The calls that come in after you've finished for the day are often the ones that matter most: the burst pipe, the furnace that won't start, the tree on the garage. This guide covers how to handle them without sleeping with your phone on the pillow.

What is an after-hours answering service?

An after-hours answering service answers your business calls when you've finished for the day: evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. It takes the caller's details, passes urgent calls to whoever's on call, and sends you the rest to deal with in the morning. Some cover only the hours you're closed; a 24/7 receptionist covers every hour, open or not.

The service can be people or software. An "after-hours virtual receptionist" usually means a person at a remote answering service. An AI answering service, also called an AI receptionist, is software that answers in your business name, follows the instructions you set for each kind of call, and sends you a summary.

What are your options for covering calls after hours?

Small service businesses usually cover the evening phone in one of four ways. Each one trades money against sleep and against what the caller gets when they ring.

Voicemail

Voicemail is free and already set up. It records a message and nothing else, so a customer with water through the ceiling hears a greeting and has to decide whether to wait for you or ring the next company. It works if your after-hours calls are almost never urgent.

Your own phone, or an on-call rota

Keeping the phone with you means every caller reaches a real person who knows the trade. The cost is that you're on call every night: the 11 PM price question rings just as loudly as the real emergency. Larger crews share this with a rota, but someone is still woken for every call.

A human after-hours answering service

A human service puts a receptionist on your line overnight, working from a script you agree with them. Callers get a person, which some customers prefer, and urgent calls can be passed on. You pay by the minute, at a much higher rate than software.

An AI answering service

An AI answering service answers the calls you forward to it, at any hour, for a monthly fee. It answers questions from your details, puts urgent callers through, books jobs or takes messages, and sends you a summary of each call. See how Juney handles a call from start to finish.

Which after-hours option fits your business?

Pick by two things: how often a night call is a real emergency, and who you want that caller to reach. The table compares the four options at 2 AM. Prices are in US dollars, checked on each vendor's own pricing page on 22 October 2026.

OptionWhat a 2 AM caller getsWho gets wokenCost (as of October 2026)
VoicemailA greeting and a beep; the emergency waits until morningNobodyIncluded with your phone plan
Your own phone or a rotaYou, or whoever's on call, if they wake up in timeYou or the person on call, for every call, urgent or notNo service fee; the cost is your sleep, or on-call pay
Human answering serviceA person reading your script, who can pass the call onThe person you name for emergenciesRuby: $250 a month for 50 minutes, 24/7, with no extra fee for after-hours cover (ruby.com/pricing)
AI answering serviceA live answer that follows your instructions for that kind of callOnly the number you choose for urgent calls (and you, if your phone rings first)AIRA: $24.95 for 30 calls (getaira.io/pricing). Frontdesk: $99 for 200 minutes (myaifrontdesk.com/pricing). Juney: $49 for 150 minutes

Be honest about the trade-offs. A good human receptionist handles a distressed caller better than software, and if your night calls are rare and never urgent, voicemail may be enough.

How do you decide which after-hours calls are urgent?

A call is urgent when waiting until morning makes things worse: damage that's still happening, a home without heat or water, a customer who can't get in or out. Quotes, price questions, booking changes and invoices can wait for a message or a booked visit. Keep the urgent list to the three or four kinds of call that really can't wait, or you're back to being woken for every call. With Juney, each kind of call becomes a scenario: the phrases callers use, and what she does next.

What does Juney do with calls outside your business hours?

Juney answers day and night, or answers only at the times you choose, and you set this in Answering schedule in the Juney tab. There are three options: Juney, always; Juney during business hours; and Juney after hours only. The scheduled options follow the business hours and time zone you set in the app.

When a call goes to voicemail, Juney still picks up, but she plays your voicemail greeting and the caller leaves a recorded message of up to a minute. On those calls she doesn't book jobs, quote prices, put anyone through or text links. So to have urgent calls put through at night, pick a mode where Juney answers at night ("Juney, always" or "Juney after hours only", which sends business-hours calls to voicemail). Each mode, with the hours it covers, is laid out in the help article on choosing who answers your calls.

You can also change it from the Home tab: tap Juney and pick one of the same three options. It's the same setting as in the Juney tab, so it stays until you change it again, which suits a storm week or an early finish.

Juney handles calls only. Texts and emails customers send you after hours still come to you.

How does an urgent call reach someone in the middle of the night?

Either your phone rings first, or Juney puts the caller through to another number. In Ringing mode you can choose Ring me first so the Juney app rings you for about 15 seconds before Juney answers (stay signed in to the app; signed out, she answers straight away), or choose Straight to Juney if you'd rather sleep. An emergency scenario then rings a number other than the one you forward to Juney, such as a second mobile or whoever's on call: Juney tells whoever answers who's calling and why, and puts the caller through if they take it. If nobody answers within 20 seconds, she takes a message instead. If you work alone with one phone, your chance at a night emergency is your phone ringing first, not the transfer.

If you'd rather take the calls you can yourself, Can I Still Answer My Own Calls With an AI Answering Service? explains ringing your phone first.

Do you need 24/7 answering, or just business hours?

You need 24/7 answering if your customers have emergencies at night and you want them passed on. Business-hours cover with messages overnight is enough if your work is planned, like quotes, installs and routine servicing. Many trades sit in between: answer every call, but put through only the few that can't wait. Juney does either, from the same Answering schedule setting.

How should you handle weekend and holiday calls?

Treat weekends and holidays as a choice of hours, not a separate problem: decide whether each day is a working day or closed, and whether urgent calls still reach someone, then set it once. In Juney you set hours or Closed for each day of the week, a usual rule for public holidays, and your own days off, such as a Christmas shutdown. For each holiday or day off you choose Closed, Normal hours, Emergencies only or Shorter hours.

How do plumbers, HVAC techs and tree services cover night emergencies?

Each trade has its own night emergency, so each sets up its own urgent scenarios. For plumbers it's the burst pipe or the sewage backup at 9 PM; see Juney's answering service for plumbers for how those calls are sorted. HVAC businesses get no-heat calls on freezing nights and no-cooling calls in a heat wave. Tree services get storm calls in waves: a tree on a house first, then insurance calls, then a week of estimate requests.

What does after-hours cover cost?

After-hours cover costs nothing with voicemail, $250 a month and up with the human service we checked, and from $24.95 to $99 a month for the AI entry plans in the table (as of October 2026). What matters is your own month: how many calls come in after hours and how long they run, because per-minute and per-call plans charge for the busy nights.

Juney costs $49 a month or $490 a year, with 150 minutes a month (about 75 calls, depending on call length) and top-ups of 100 minutes for $20, bought in the app, which don't expire, after a 7-day free trial with 50 answering minutes (as of October 2026). Night calls you take yourself after the ring don't count toward your minutes. Messages Juney takes as voicemail do. Juney is built by Trillet, the voice AI platform trusted by over 4,000 businesses. The details are on Juney's pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an after-hours virtual receptionist a real person?

Usually, yes. "Virtual receptionist" normally means a person at a remote answering service. An AI receptionist, such as Juney, is software that answers in your business name. Introduce Juney as your AI assistant in your greeting, so callers know who they're speaking with.

Will Juney wake me up at night?

Your phone rings at night only if you've chosen Ring me first in Ringing mode: then it rings for about 15 seconds on every call, including calls your Answering schedule sends to voicemail, while you're signed in to the app. Choose Straight to Juney and nothing rings: Juney answers, or the call goes straight to voicemail, and when she's answering at night she puts emergencies through to the number you set. Her call notes still arrive as an app notification, and by email if you've turned that on.

Can Juney put an emergency through after hours?

Yes, when she's answering normally rather than taking a voicemail. Pick an Answering schedule where Juney answers at night ("Juney, always" or "Juney after hours only"), then add an emergency scenario with the number to put callers through to. A voicemail call can't be put through.

Does Juney take messages when I'm closed?

Yes. Choose "Juney during business hours" and callers outside your hours hear your voicemail greeting and leave a message of up to a minute. It arrives as an app notification (and by email, if you've turned that on), written out in the Calls tab.
