Conditional Call Forwarding: A Poor Fit for Answering Services
Conditional call forwarding is a poor fit for answering services: carriers set the wait and voicemail may answer. Juney uses all-calls forwarding.

TL;DR
- Conditional call forwarding is a poor fit for an answering service: your carrier controls the wait, and voicemail or a phone feature may take the call before the service gets it.
- Juney avoids that wait by asking your carrier to forward all calls. In the Juney app, Ring me first gives you a chance to answer on Juney's timer.
- Conditional forwarding sends calls elsewhere when your line is busy, you don't answer, or your phone can't be reached.
- All calls to that number are forwarded, including personal ones. Check your carrier's forwarding charges and use Excluded contacts for people you don't want Juney to answer.

You may want an answering service to cover calls while you're on a job, without giving up the chance to speak to customers yourself. The kind of forwarding you choose determines what happens before the service gets the call.
What is conditional call forwarding?
Conditional call forwarding sends a call to another number only when a condition on your line is met. Forwarding all calls, also called unconditional forwarding, sends the call on before your phone line rings.
The conditions are separate: busy covers a line that's busy, including a call you decline; no answer applies after the carrier's wait; and unreachable covers a phone the network can't reach. Your carrier may combine some rules, or require separate settings for them.
For example, a plumber might let a call ring while finishing a repair, then send it to an answering service if nobody picks up. That's no-answer forwarding: the carrier waits before passing on the call. The business call forwarding guide explains the broader choices.
Why is conditional forwarding a poor fit for an answering service?
Conditional forwarding is a poor fit for an answering service because your carrier controls the wait before the call is passed on, and voicemail or a phone feature may answer during that wait. Juney asks for all calls to be forwarded before your phone line rings.
Your carrier decides the wait
With no-answer forwarding, the answering service can't pick up until the carrier sends the call on. One answering-service carrier guide lists Verizon's wait as about 30 seconds and says customers can't adjust it. T-Mobile's short-code list includes a way to change its forwarding delay, so the choice depends on the network (as of October 2026).
What to do: Ask your carrier how long your line rings before the forward, and whether it can change the wait. Make a test call and listen through the full delay.
Your phone can answer before the forward
An iPhone's Live Voicemail or Call Screening may handle a call while you're waiting for a no-answer rule. Verizon tells iPhone owners to turn Live Voicemail off when they use conditional forwarding. Apple says Call Screening answers unknown callers for you.
What to do: Check the instructions for your carrier and answering service, then test with the iPhone settings you intend to use. Don't assume a call reached the service just because your phone rang.
Carrier voicemail may take the call
Your carrier's voicemail is another destination for unanswered calls. Rogers says conditional forwarding won't work while voicemail is active; other carriers and plans may handle the settings differently.
What to do: Ask your carrier how voicemail and your chosen forward interact. Call from another number, let it ring out, and check whether the service or voicemail answers.
Declining a call can follow a different rule
Declining a call can count as busy rather than unanswered. A no-answer rule alone may not send that call to the same place.
What to do: Ask your carrier which busy and no-answer rules apply, then test a declined call as well as one you let ring.
Availability depends on your carrier and plan
Not every plan offers the conditional route you want. Google Fi's help describes ringing all linked numbers or always forwarding, rather than a forward-when-unanswered option (as of October 2026).
What to do: Check your carrier and plan before choosing an answering service that needs conditional forwarding. Ask where it can forward calls, not just whether voicemail is available.
Separate conditions can mean separate settings
Busy, no answer and unreachable can require different carrier rules. Forwarding all calls uses a single all-calls setup instead, though the steps depend on your carrier.
What to do: Write down which rules are active before changing them. Your carrier can tell you how to remove old rules; Juney's help center lists supported countries and carriers.
How do other answering services handle this?
Some services let your carrier give you the first chance to answer; others ring you through their own app. These are different setups, even though both can leave an AI to answer a call you don't take.
As of October 2026, Upfirst recommends no-answer forwarding as a starting point. Rosie, Goodcall, AIRA and Dialzara describe both an all-calls route and a missed-call route. In the latter, the carrier controls the wait; check each provider's instructions and your plan.
Beside and Allo also offer app-based ringing before the AI answers. Beside's published descriptions of its timing differ, so check its current settings rather than relying on a particular wait.
How does Juney avoid the problem?
Juney asks you to forward all calls, so your carrier sends them to her before your phone line rings. Your phone's voicemail and screening don't get to those calls before the forward.
In Juney, the app can ring you for about 15 seconds with Ring me first before she answers. Juney sets that wait, not your carrier. Answer in the app to take the call yourself, or let it ring and she answers. Choose Straight to Juney when you want her to answer without ringing you.
The app supplies all-calls forwarding instructions, not separate busy or no-answer codes. After you switch forwarding on, Juney places a short, silent line check to see whether a call to your business number reaches her.
What does forwarding all calls cost you?
All calls to the forwarded number go to Juney, personal calls included, and your carrier may charge for forwarding. If your plan charges by forwarded minute, sending every call can cost more than forwarding only unanswered calls.
Add family or regular suppliers to Excluded contacts so Juney doesn't answer them. The app rings you for an excluded caller with Ring me first, then the call goes to voicemail if you don't answer; with Straight to Juney, it goes to voicemail.
To receive a call in the app, stay signed in, allow notifications and keep a data connection. If the app can't be reached, Juney answers without ringing you. The forwarded call is connected while the app rings, so those seconds can count toward carrier forwarding charges.
What to do: Check the forwarding rate on your plan and test the setup with someone you trust. Decide whether you want personal calls on the same number forwarded too.
How do you switch from conditional to all-calls forwarding?
Remove your old conditional rules first, then follow the all-calls setup and test your line. The carrier can tell you which rules are active and how to cancel them.
- Ask your carrier, or check its help page, how to cancel the busy and no-answer forwards you set before. Check whether an unreachable rule also needs removing.
- Follow the Juney app's steps to forward all calls from your business line. The help center explains how to switch your line on.
- Use another phone to call your business number. Check where the call goes, and test Ring me first if you plan to use it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my call go to voicemail instead of my answering service?
Your carrier's voicemail or a phone feature may answer before a no-answer forward reaches the service. Check the active forwarding rules with your carrier, then call your number from another phone and let it ring out.
Can I use conditional forwarding with Juney?
No. Juney asks you to forward all calls, and its app supplies all-calls forwarding instructions. If you want to answer yourself, the Juney app can ring you with Ring me first before she answers.
What does “no answer” mean to my carrier?
It means the carrier waits for the call to ring without an answer before forwarding it. The wait and available settings depend on the carrier and plan.
Does declining a call count as no answer?
A declined call can follow your carrier's busy rule rather than its no-answer rule. Ask your carrier which forwarding rule applies to your line and test it.
