Smith.ai Review 2026: Pricing, Per-Call Costs and Who It Suits

A Smith.ai review for 2026: Smith.ai pricing for its AI receptionist, Hybrid and human plans, worked out per call, plus the catches and who it suits.

TL;DR

  • Smith.ai is an AI receptionist billed per call, with live North American receptionists behind it. It's free for 25 calls a month, then Pro is $150 for 75 calls (as of October 2026).
  • Per-call pricing suits long calls and very low volumes. At 75 two-minute calls it's $150; Juney is $49.
  • Catches: 30 days' notice to cancel, chosen live-agent help priced per call, no phone app.
  • It suits law firms and intake-heavy offices that want a person on hand.

We haven't used Smith.ai ourselves. This review is built from Smith.ai's own pricing and product pages, a search of the App Store and Google Play, and its public reviews on Trustpilot, all checked on 22 October 2026. Smith.ai does several things Juney doesn't, and we say so.

How much does Smith.ai cost in 2026?

As of October 2026, Smith.ai's AI receptionist is free for 25 calls a month, $150 a month for 75 calls on Pro, and $500 for 300 calls on Enterprise. It bills per call, not per minute, and each call past your bundle costs between $3.00 and $2.10 depending on the plan.

Pro$270150$2.30As above
Pro$500300$2.17As above
Enterprise$800500$2.10Smith.ai sets up and tunes the AI, custom integrations, several locations

Enterprise also comes as a $500 plan for 300 calls, as custom plans above 1,000 calls, and as a 6-month plan with rollover calls. There are no setup fees, and every AI plan includes a dedicated Smith.ai phone number, spam screening, 12 or more voices, English and Spanish, and connections to Clio, Salesforce, HubSpot and Zapier.

Smith.ai also sells two plans with more people in them:

  • Hybrid: the AI answers every call and hands some to a live receptionist, from about $2.50 a call. Its estimates put a live-agent call at about $4.80 and an AI call at about $1.80.
  • Human-first: $300 for 30 calls, $810 for 90 or $2,100 for 300, with extra calls at $11.50, $10.50 and $8.50.

What would Smith.ai cost at your call volume?

At 30 calls a month Smith.ai costs $15, at 75 calls $150, and at 150 calls $270, on its cheapest AI plan for each month. Call length doesn't change those numbers, because it charges per call. Prices are as of October 2026, before tax.

Calls a monthSmith.ai, cheapest AI planJuney, at 2 minutes a callJuney, at 4 minutes a call
20$0 (Free)$49$49
30$15 (Free, 5 calls at $3.00)$49$49
75$150 (Pro, or Free with 50 calls at $3.00)$49$89
150$270 (Pro, 150 calls)$89$149

How the less obvious ones work out:

  • Smith.ai at 30 and 75 calls: the free plan bills $3.00 for each call past 25 once you switch overages on, so 75 calls costs the same $150 as Pro.
  • Smith.ai at 150 calls: the 150-call Pro bundle ($270) beats the 75-call one plus 75 calls at $2.50 ($337.50).
  • Juney: $49 covers 150 minutes, then top-ups of 100 minutes for $20, bought in the app. At 150 four-minute calls (600 minutes) that's $49 plus five $20 top-ups.

Smith.ai is the lower bill up to about 40 calls a month, on its free plan, and it gains ground when calls run long: at 75 calls, Juney would cost more than $150 only if calls averaged nearly 9 minutes. For most trade calls, a few minutes about a job, a plan that counts minutes comes out lower. Ten services are worked through the same way in AI answering service pricing compared.

What to do: count last month's calls, not minutes, and price the Smith.ai bundle just above that number.

What catches are in Smith.ai's plans?

The main catches are a 30-day notice period, live-agent help that isn't free on every call, and a free plan that needs a card. None of them is hidden, but each is easy to miss on a quick read. As of October 2026:

  • 30 days' notice to cancel. AI and Hybrid plans are month to month, but Smith.ai's FAQ says it needs 30 days' notice when you cancel. Plan changes are made by emailing support and take effect the next month.
  • People cost extra when you ask for them. When the AI decides to escalate a call to a live receptionist, there's no fee. If you set calls to go to a live agent for checking details or booking, that's a per-call add-on with no published price.
  • The free plan takes a card. A card is required at signup, but overages are off by default and nothing is charged until you switch them on.
  • Spam counts unless removed. More than 20 million known spam numbers are blocked before they reach the AI, and those don't count. Other spam calls count by default, and you can remove up to 10% of your calls from each bill as spam.
  • A different number. Every AI plan includes a dedicated Smith.ai number. Its AI pages don't spell out how your existing number reaches it, so ask how forwarding would work on your line.

What to do: if you're trying Smith.ai on the free plan, decide before day one whether overages go on, and put the 30-day notice in your calendar if you move to Pro.

What does Smith.ai do well?

Smith.ai's strength is the people behind the AI: live receptionists on the same account as the AI receptionist, with several ways to pay for them. As of October 2026, from its own pages:

  • A real free plan. 25 calls a month for $0 is enough to cover a quiet side business, or to test the AI on real calls.
  • Live backup when the AI is stuck. Smith.ai says more than 500 North America-based receptionists stand behind the AI, and AI-started escalations are free.
  • Hybrid plans. You choose which calls go to a person, such as new clients only, or daytime calls only, from about $2.50 a call.
  • Per-call billing. A long intake call costs the same as a short one.
  • Testing before launch. Quality Studio runs simulated calls (50 a month on the free plan) and suggests fixes before real callers reach the AI.
  • Integrations. Clio, Salesforce and HubSpot connect directly, and scheduling works with Calendly and others.
  • English and Spanish on every AI plan.

Where does Smith.ai fall short?

For a tradesperson, Smith.ai's weak spots are cost per call at everyday volumes, a setup built around a web dashboard, and a product shaped around office intake. The notice period adds friction if it doesn't work out.

  • Costly at everyday volumes. Short calls cost as much as long ones, so a month of quick price checks and booking calls adds up fast: 75 calls is $150.
  • No phone app. We searched the App Store and Google Play on 22 October 2026 and found no Smith.ai app. Setup and testing happen in Quality Studio on the web.
  • Built around legal intake. Law firms lead its industry list, Clio is a headline integration, and many of its public reviews come from attorneys. Home services and general contractors are on the list too, but the product's language is about qualifying leads and client intake.
  • Slow to leave. Thirty days' notice means a month's extra bill if you decide it isn't right.

What to do: on the free plan, ring your own line with a typical job inquiry and a typical emergency, and check whether the AI books or hands off the way you'd want.

What do Smith.ai's customers say?

Smith.ai has a long public record, and most of it is positive. On 22 October 2026, Smith.ai's Trustpilot page showed a TrustScore of 4.3 from 375 reviews, with 89% five-star and 7% one-star. Those reviews cover the whole company, and many are about its human receptionists rather than the AI.

Praise centers on professional, 24/7 call handling and responsive support; one September 2026 reviewer calls it "an efficient, effective, and reasonably priced call answering service". The complaints are mostly about billing and leaving. One October 2026 reviewer wrote, "I've been trying to cancel my account for over a week."

G2 and Capterra blocked our requests, so we haven't used them, and we found no Smith.ai app with store ratings.

On Reddit, two lawyers in the same r/Lawyertalk thread (August 2026) put both sides. One finds it follows instructions well; a seven-year customer warns that complicated instructions get mishandled. Both comments are about the service as a whole, not only the AI.

A Reddit comment: Smith.ai is good for me, they follow my basic instructions well, and asking about cheaper starter plans might save a few bucks.

A Reddit comment from a seven-year Smith.ai user: it's a phone answering service, so if you make instructions too complicated they will get them wrong.

Who is Smith.ai a good fit for?

Smith.ai fits a professional office, especially a law firm, where calls are long intake conversations and a person sometimes needs to take over. It also fits a very quiet line that stays inside the free plan. As of October 2026:

  • Fewer than 25 calls a month: the free plan costs nothing.
  • Long calls: per-call billing doesn't punish a 10-minute intake.
  • Callers who need a person: Hybrid and human plans put live receptionists on the calls you choose.
  • Spanish-speaking callers, or Clio, Salesforce or HubSpot users: all are on every AI plan.

It's a weaker fit for a busy trade line of short calls, an owner who wants to set everything up on a phone, or anyone who wants to leave on short notice.

When is Juney a better fit, and when isn't it?

Juney fits an owner-operator in the trades with a steady stream of short calls who wants them answered, booked into Google Calendar and put through when urgent, all from a phone app. Smith.ai fits better if you need a live person behind the AI, long intake calls, or fewer than 25 calls a month. The side-by-side detail is on Juney vs Smith.ai.

As of October 2026, Juney is $49 a month, or $490 for a year paid upfront, with 150 minutes a month (about 75 calls, depending on length), then top-ups of 100 minutes for $20, bought in the app, which don't expire. Booking into Google Calendar and putting callers through come on that plan. You start with a 7-day free trial and 50 answering minutes, and there's no setup fee and no contract.

The differences that matter most:

  • Set up on the phone. Juney is an iPhone and Android app with no web dashboard. You link your website, check what Juney learned, hear it on a test call, set what happens for each kind of call, and follow the forwarding steps for your carrier. Your customers keep calling your number.
  • You're the human backup. In Ringing mode, choose Ring me first and the Juney app rings you for about 15 seconds. Answer and the call is yours, using none of your minutes; let it ring out and Juney answers. There are no staffed receptionists behind Juney, so if you want a stranger taking the hard calls, Smith.ai is the stronger choice.
  • Its limits. Juney books into Google Calendar and no other calendar. It speaks English, with American, British or Australian voices, and works with business numbers in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. It handles calls: it texts callers booking links and follow-ups, but customers' own texts still come to you. There's no automatic spam screening; you block numbers by hand.

Juney is built by Trillet, the voice AI platform trusted by over 4,000 businesses. Plans and the trial are on Juney's pricing.
